#809 Melmetal

Melmetal is a Pokémon that has seemingly reappeared in the world after 3,000 years. In ancient times, it was worshipped by some for its ability to create metal from nothing, and the metal that it shed was used to create unique tools that otherwise couldn’t have been made. It was considered a sacred Pokémon that lived in a secluded area deep within a wooded land that was full of sedimentary rocks rich with magnetite.

In recent times, mysterious boxes were found in the vicinity of those remote areas where Melmetal is believed to have once lived. Inside these boxes were an assortment of rusty lumps of metal, some of which turned out to be slumbering Meltan in disguise. The reason for Meltan’s presence inside the box can only be guessed, although some Pokémon professors speculate that the people who glorified and worshipped Melmetal decided to keep it safe when the Pokémon split itself apart into multiple Meltan.

As mentioned in the last article, Melmetal is created when one strong Meltan absorbs the rest of the group it lives with in order to evolve. It is a large, silver Pokémon with a vaguely humanoid build – an ancient, hulking industrial golem made of living metal. The process of evolution has hardened much of this Pokémon’s body, making parts of it extremely strong and sturdy. Other parts of its body, however, are still in a semi-liquid state. The nut motif seen on Meltan continues with its evolution, but there are a lot more of them now, embedded in or attached to its body: one around each shoulder, one around the centre of each arm, one in each hand, one in each foot, and a small light grey one in the centre of its torso. A large, golden hexagonal nut encircles its neck and a smaller one acts as its head.

Melmetal’s arms can flex and flow, capable of whipping forward to deliver powerful punches. When it attacks, the nuts encircling its arms slide down as if to bulk up its fists. Sometimes, it uses the golden nut on its upper body like an axle to spin its arms around, dealing a double strike to its opponent. By applying centrifugal force on its arms in this way, Melmetal has one of the strongest punches of all known Pokémon.

At the end of its life, Melmetal’s body rusts and falls apart. The small shards left behind will eventually be reborn as multiple, independent Meltan. It is believed that, after Melmetal’s death 3,000 years ago, its worshippers placed the Meltan born from it inside mysterious boxes as a way for Melmetal to return in the future.

In a distant land, there are legends about a cyclopean giant. In fact, this hulking behemoth is a Melmetal flooded with Gigantamax energy. In its Gigantamax state, Melmetal can use its elastic and flexible body to land punches at foes while keeping its distance. By bringing the hex nuts on its fists together (which resemble brass knuckles), it can create gigantic fists for an even bigger punch than usual. Gigantamax Melmetal can also release tremendous electric beams from the silver hexagonal nut in its belly, which are capable of vaporising opponents in one shot. The electricity is generated by the flow of liquid metal stored in Gigantamax Melmetal’s body.
